Rising Trend Predictions for “As-a-Service” Models for 2021

James Bishop • Jan 04, 2021

2020 was a pivotal year for the cloud computing sector as demand for remote working and home working solutions significantly increased, fuelled by the dramatic changes in working patterns which were accelerated by the global pandemic.

If there is one thing that 2020 has taught us in the corporate world – it’s the requirement to adapt to unpredictable working conditions with fast and agile solutions.

Throughout 2020 we worked in collaboration with our clients to specify and select individual elements to deliver multi-cloud environments designed to scale and shrink in line with business changes and demands.  And these demands will be more prevalent in 2021.

Flexibility is key with business confidence and stability potentially not returning until the latter half of the year.  Cloud technology and virtual infrastructure has played a vital role in helping UK businesses to adapt and provide efficient and effective working methods to support their employees wherever they may be.

That’s why we believe there will be an overall increase in the uptake of “As-a-Service”, on-demand cloud-based services as companies get to grips with their ever-changing working environments and workforce.

IT Support as a Service

As businesses adapt to uncertain working conditions and assess operational budgets in a bid to reduce costs - we’ll see a sharper rise in companies looking to outsource their help desk services, either replacing the need for onsite in-house IT teams or ensuring their IT functions work in collaboration with outsourced third party IT support services to ensure optimal efficiency and reliability.

At Skye Cloud we offer flexible options for in-house IT teams, from overspill services, support and escalation services through to fully managed helpdesk support as a service with 24/7 monitoring.

Business Adoption of Hybrid Cloud Models

Companies will explore the benefits of adopting hybrid and multi-cloud models to manage their business. We’ll see a convergence of the traditional PaaS (Platform as a Service) and IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) models as businesses look to blend cloud solutions to provide the best model to suit their individual requirements. We’ve seen a significant increase already from our clients in the UK as they request our expertise to create bespoke hybrid solutions that leverage the most relevant cloud technology for their unique business and operational needs. We work in collaboration with our clients to specify and select individual elements to deliver multi-cloud environments designed to scale and shrink in line with business demand.

Shift towards On Demand (Pay as you Go) Cloud Services

We’ll see an overall increase in the uptake of “As-a-Service”, on-demand cloud-based services as companies get to grips with their ever-changing working environments and workforce. If there is one single thing that 2020 has fundamentally taught us in the corporate world – it’s the requirement to adapt with fast and agile solutions. For this reason alone, we predict that more and more businesses will look to the flexibility of the cloud for on demand technology services, such as faster and more affordable data management and storage solutions, scalable cloud hosting, virtual shared and private virtual server solutions, along with all the other available ‘as-a-service’ models that cloud technology can offer.

A sharp rise in the use of Desktop as a Service

Companies will be looking to leverage virtual desktops as they centralise the management of employee workstations and increase staff efficiencies by ensuring everyone is using synchronized technology to provide more stable, secure and efficient remote working solutions.

When you migrate your entire desktop to a managed cloud service you remove the governance requirement for your workforce to follow best practice guidelines and apply software and security updates and therefore enable your staff to focus on better productivity and operational efficiency in a streamlined and managed way.

Recently Skye Cloud has seen more and more of our clients using Nutanix and as a result, have seen first-hand the performance, scalability and financial benefits it provides. During the last review of our infrastructure, it became clear that something more than a simple refresh was needed. For years, the not-for-profit sector has struggled to keep up with the fast-changing pace of today’s technological world. Complex sign-off procedures, tight scrutiny of budgets/expenditure, and often a lack of in-house IT resources to define a cohesive strategy or manage any third-party contracts means that they are plagued by legacy systems, complacent incumbent providers and unexplainable rising costs.
